Terra Vitis’ digital vineyard in Moldova: precise data over intuition

How weather stations, sensors, precision irrigation, rain- and hail-sheltered vineyards and modern crop-protection systems help manage yields and climate risks.

This article reports on a visit to one of Moldova’s distinctive farming operations. It examines Terra Vitis’s commercial experience with Y-shaped grape trellises, pergola training, rain-cover film, smart sensors, process automation, improved decision-making, weather stations and, of course, its extensive collection of table grape cultivars. The farm has more than 130 cultivars, although some sources put the figure as high as 180. The farm manager also discusses crop-protection strategies and plant protection product programmes, market requirements for produce quality and safety, intensive sweet cherry production, and the farm’s experience using bumblebees for pollination.

You can also watch a video of a visit to the farm by a delegation of leading farmers from Uzbekistan, supported by an FAO/EBRD project.

The village of Burlacu lies in Cahul District, in the warm, dry south of Moldova. It is home to Terra Vitis, a family-owned agricultural business managed by agronomist Petru Mihov, with his son Dumitru playing an active role in its development. Read more on east-fruit.com
